Bad housing effects health, safety, children’s futures: in the UK, one child in seven is growing up homeless or in bad housing. Four million children in the UK live in poverty after their housing costs have been paid, and they are almost twice as likely to suffer from ill health as other children and are twice as likely as other children to leave school with no GCSEs.

ChloeChloe’s family fell behind on their mortgage payments after her dad broke his leg and couldn’t work, while her mum was pregnant with Chloe’s little brother.

Their mortgage provider refused to discuss reduced payment options. Then they started charging penalty fees. Mum and dad were really worried and didn’t know where to turn for help.

Chloe was terrified she would lose the only home she’d ever known.
But then they met a Shelter caseworker, who represented them in court. She negotiated a repayment plan with the judge and stopped the repossession order. The whole family were able to look forward to spending Christmas in a home that’s safe, secure and permanent.

Every single penny and pound generated through Pennies will contribute to helping people in situations like Chloe’s.
