Support and research for people with dementia

Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading support services and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them.

There are 700,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2025.

Alzheimer’s Society has over 25,000 members and provides more than 2,000 services across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Alzheimer’s Society brings together people with dementia, carers, family and friends, health and social care professionals, researchers, scientists and politicians to work towards improving the lives of all concerned.

The activities of Alzheimer’s Society include:

  • The provision of clear and accurate information on all forms of dementia, on services and benefits and on caring, legal and financial matters.
  • Providing services and support to people with dementia and their families through local support groups, information and telephone helplines, as well as a national web site.
  • Providing advice and information to callers through the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Helpline.
  • Funding research into dementia through its innovative Quality Research in Dementia (QRD) programme, involving people with dementia and their carers in setting research priorities in the areas of cause, cure and care.
  • Running training courses and conferences and produces high quality and authoritative material for professionals and care service providers.
  • Producing a wide range of publications in different languages and formats including CD and audio cassette, large print and Braille.
  • Campaigning for the needs and interests of people with dementia and those who care for them to be recognised in improved health and social care and for greater public understanding and awareness of dementia.

Alzheimer’s Society aims to involve people with dementia in all aspects of its work. As a member of Alzheimer’s Disease International, Alzheimer’s Society contributes to worldwide efforts to tackle the international problem of dementia. As one of the leading organisations, it supports the development of similar organisations in other countries.
