Our trustees

The Pennies Foundation is governed by a board of trustees who are all volunteers.

Our trustees are responsible for the overall direction and development of the foundation and Pennies through good governance and clear strategic planning, ensuring that we are well run and delivering our charitable objectives.

The board of trustees delegates the day-to-day management to the Chief Executive, Alison Hutchinson.

The members of the board of trustees are elected at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and, subject to re-election or early retirement, serve for three years.

We look for a balanced and diverse board of trustees with the right skills and experience to help us put Pennies into practice.

Chair of Trustees

Robert Leitão
Head of UK & Chairman of the Management Committee, Rothschild Global Financial Advisory

Robert’s experience is primarily in mergers and acquisitions for public companies, and ranges from recommended deals to hostile offers and defenses across a variety of sectors.

Prior to joining Rothschild in 1998, Robert was at Morgan Grenfell & Co in London where he was appointed a Director in 1995.

He qualified as a chartered accountant with Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co (KPMG) in 1987. Robert holds a degree in Engineering from Imperial College London.


Peter Nugent
Trustee and Volunteer Finance Director, Pennies

Most recently Peter was the Finance Director of Puzzler Media Ltd, the UK leading puzzle magazine publisher and puzzle content provider. He joined in 1988 and was involved in all the company’s major strategic decisions, including disposals, acquisitions and mergers.

Peter was also involved in the Management Buyout in April 2002 and the secondary Management Buyout in December 2005. Peter has also held roles in Esso Petroleum Ireland and Arthur Young Ireland (now Ernst & Young).

Peter Ayliffe
Non-Executive Chairman, Monitise Group

Peter AyliffePeter Ayliffe is Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Monitise, a leading mobile banking and payments group that provides services to more than 350 financial institutions and other leading brands globally. 

Until September 2013, Peter was President and Chief Executive Officer of Visa Europe for seven and a half years where he was responsible for Visa’s European business in 37 countries, accounting for some 30% of the worldwide expenditure on Visa cards. Prior to Visa Europe, Peter spent over 30 years in retail banking.

He has also been on the board of Investors In People (UK) and is currently President of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and a Non-Exective Director on the board of Coventry Building Society.

Graham Edwards
Chief Executive, Telereal Trillium

Graham has been the Chief Executive of Telereal Trillium since 2001, when he led the joint venture which set up the company.

Before joining Telereal, Graham was Chief Investment Officer of Talisman Global Asset Management, and prior to that, he was a fund manager at Merrill Lynch Investment Management and also worked for BT Group plc.

He read Economics at Cambridge University and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Association of Corporate Treasurers (AMCT) and the UK Society of Investment Professionals (ASIP).


Simon Jones
Client Services Director, Chime Communications

Simon is a director at brand consultancy The Good Relations Group, part of the international communications and sports marketing group Chime Communications.

Starting out in broadcast news, Simon has has twenty years experience advising governments, corporations, organisations and individuals on strategic communications and reputation management.

Peter Klauber

Peter is a former Senior Partner of Ernst and Young, where latterly he was Markets Partner for middle market. Since leaving the profession in 2008 he has focused on working with entrepreneurial and fast growth companies with roles as Chairman or Director in companies including Harry Ramsdens and Fishworks restaurant chains, Hotel Chocolat, Climate Cars and FTSE 250 company Dominos Pizza UK & IRL, where he also served as a member of the Audit and Remuneration committees.

Penny Lovell
Head of Private Client Strategies, Close Brothers

Penny is Head of Private Client Strategies at Close Brothers, a leading specialist financial services group which provides advice and investment management solutions to a wide range of clients.

Penny was formerly Managing Director in the Private Banking & Trust business at Rothschild, which she joined in October 2009.

Penny is a Trustee of Royal Academy Schools, and of the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts; she is a member of the UK Advisory Board for Room to Read and sits on the Development Board of the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Julian Taylor
Partner, Simmons & Simmons

Julian is a partner in the London Employment Group of international law firm Simmons & Simmons, where he provides advice to a wide range of clients, principally institutions in the financial services industry.

He is also Head of Employment Law Training, responsible for all client-facing training products, and is a member of the Firm’s Diversity Forum. Earlier in his career, he practised as a barrister for five years and worked as a teacher. He is also a school governor.

Nick Wilkinson
CEO, Evans Cycles

Nick is the CEO of specialist cycle retailer Evans Cycles.

Prior to that, Nick was the CEO of Maxeda DIY, a leading retailer in the Netherlands and Belgium, part of the Maxeda retail group, where he was also a member of the Executive Board.

Maxeda DIY, which he joined in 2007, operates over 300 shops in the Benelux, and is backed by private equity investors KKR, Permira and Cinven.

Previously, Nick was at Dixons Retail, where he held roles as Group Managing Director of Currys, Dixons, and The Link. He also served as Group Purchasing Director. Earlier in his career Nick worked at both McKinsey and Unilever.

Nick is also a non-executive director at registered charity Age UK Trading.
